Amani has light blue eyes, unusual for a Mirajin, and she assumes that she is the child of a Gallan soldier. The Commander hunting him is Naguib Al’Oman, one of the Sultan’s sons. He doesn’t seem to recognise her from the previous night. The foreigner is on the run from soldiers and Amani hides him. This is a world of Djinni, of ghouls and other monsters that are only held at bay by iron. Amani wants her best friend, Tamid, to escape Dustwalk with her, but he doesn’t want to leave. The Sultan allied himself with the Gallan army to claim power twenty years before, now the country is overrun with Gallans, who take their guns to make war elsewhere. One of Amani’s competitors is a foreigner – they help each other to escape when a riot breaks out, before separating. She wants to get out of Dustwalk, the town she’s grown up in – if she doesn’t leave, she will be married off. Amani disguises herself as a boy to enter a competition at the pistol pit. And she’d never have predicted she’d fall in love with him… or that he’d help her unlock the powerful truth of who she really is. But in all her years spent dreaming of leaving home, she never imagined she’d gallop away on a mythical horse, fleeing the murderous Sultan’s army, with a fugitive who’s wanted for treason. When she meets Jin, a mysterious and devastatingly handsome foreigner, in a shooting contest, she figures he’s the perfect escape route.
